Hi! I am Heather and welcome to Yarrow and Yew Farm and Nursery's site. Y&Y is a small, woman-owned farm/nursery business that grows fresh cut salad greens and culinary herbs and PNW native nursery stock. I use beyond-organic methods and permaculture techniques to encourage healthy soils and diverse wildlife on this little piece of the Earth.
I've been working with plants since I was a kid and even went to college to study (although I've learned far more on-farm then in school!) I came to work more with food and medicinal plants after learning about how most of our food is produced and following some major health issues. I quickly realized that healthy, nutritious food is inaccessible to many people in this country (and most people around the world). & I also learned that conventional agriculture can be a play a major role in soil degradation, wildlife habitat destruction, the poisoning of our waters, the over usage of petroleum and more. And it turns out that eating food sprayed with a host of poisons isn't the best for human health either! I moved here in 2021 and together with the landowners and the NRCS we are striving to conserve the beautiful oak groves and a forested riparian area from the changed hydrology due to many years of surrounding agricultural practices. ***The farm is located in the Willamette Valley and sits on the unceded territories of the Kalapuya, Atfalati, Ahantchuyuk and others who are now the Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde.*** And I deeply thank, honor and acknowledge these aboriginal caretakers. www.grandronde.org/ |
*Yarrow is the Wounded Healer herb, it mends cuts and wounds and souls. The Pacific Yew is a slow growing hardwood tree that people of this region traded and crafted utensils and weapons from and it also has cancer fighting chemicals in its bark. The English Yew of western Europe has a similar history of usage and chemical constituents. These plant allies hold a very special place in my ancestry and my heart, hence the name.
